Subject: Jockstraps for PE
How many of the guys here had wear jockstraps to PE Class? Did you have jockstrap inspection? |

Subject: Jockstraps for PE
Jocks were required from 6th grade on up. Trouble is our coach was young and we just ignored him. We all changed and showered in a small locker room but no jock wearers unless you were out for sports. Later I moved to a larger school and everyone had a jock on. some guys were still wearing Bike youth jocks but needed a larger size. Later in high school we had the annual "you have to jock up" speach due to the school insurance. No jock checks but the shorts were the old style cotton twill and when you were doing sit ups, the coach could do his jock check then. A guy would get serious about a game of dodgeball, then all of a sudden your shorts were around your ankles and your jocked butt was fully exposed. Boys will be Boys! The local dept store sold Bike jocks out of a bulk pack, so you mostly saw the old cotton ones with the red stripes. |

First day PE class of each high school semester, the coach advised the all-male class, "whether you think you need one or not, you must wear a jockstrap for this class." No routine inspections were enforced, but the threat of random checks, kept every guy dedicated to routine strapping for each class. However, the uniform white gym shorts were a thin enough material to allow strap lines to be visible while worn. The coach offered ample laundered straps available from the team sports shared supply to anyone who felt too shy to buy one, or ask his mom to wash one for him. Bins of cotton Bikes with the red waistband trim stripes were always available in the locker room bins. The coach's passing thru the locker room before class and before showers was his way of making sure everyone complied. "If you show up and put on your jockstrap for each class you will pass," was the incentive. It seemed that all were happy to be like all the other guys in regard to strapping for each class... almost shaming or daring those reluctant to strap up. In our swimming pool classes, for lifesaving, nude swimming was compulsory. The coach didn't want any wet swimwear stinking up the locker room (which already carried the sweet aroma of sweat-soaked jockstraps.) For our PE wrestling classes, the coach suggested wearing a protecitive cup supporter, although only a few of us ever followed that suggestion. As those classes continued, a few guys learned the value of a cup the hard way. Learning the common sense of wearing a jockstrap was one of the more important lessons of high school PE and team sports programs. |

Part of the uniform back in HS as well. Jock, shorts, two sided shirt, white on one and school color on the other. But always a good time when basketball was played because it was skin vs shirt and you always saw a strap band above the waistband of the shorts. Of course cups had been required for baseball so always a nice look when the team got ready. |

In junior high school we were required to buy the school's gym uniform from the school which consisted of a white t-shirt, dark blue shorts and a Protex jockstrap. Our gym teachers over the next three years would be jockstraps checks on us by asking us to pull the leg strap out from under the opening of the shorts to prove we were wearing them. I always wore my jockstrap naked underneath, but many of the other guys wore their jockstrap over their underwear. |

Subject: 50,000 jockstraps.............
In HS I worked in a variety store that sold school PE uniforms and jockstraps. I earned a degree in physical education, and taught Junior High and HS PE for several years. Most of my career was spent as a manufacturers representative, selling sporting goods including pe uniforms and jockstraps to school districts and athletic leagues. While cleaning our my basement, I found a box containing hundreds of school supply lists for mid western schools that more often than not listed jockstraps as a requirement for boys PE classes. I previously collected these to provide insight for potential marketing "cold calls". If anyone is interested, I have posted about 100 of these lists in the FILES section of a Yahoo Group I moderate. Subject: Those PE classes
Ours were handed out by the PE teacher, and charged to parents obviously. The changing room waste bin always had the odd Pro-Sport, Litesome or Gray+Nicholson cardboard box, esp at beginning of term. Also worn for rugby, XC, cricket and athletics, they sometimes ended up muddy wrecks. No checks though, and obviously those concertina covering legstraps showed through even heavier weight rugby shorts, and waistbands when playing shirtless. |

Subject: Compulsory jockstraps
In the 1950's and 1960's Jockstraps were compulsory in California beginning at 7th grade, when most of us had not reached puberty yet. We were happy to wear them because it made us "men"! This seemed to be the rule at every high school in America. I have always been curious how this was enforced at a national level. There must have been some government agency that enforced a nation wide requirement. Does anybody know?
I never met a man nor boy who complained. Boy Scout leaders and other youth leader encouraged or insisted we wear jockstraps.
When boys first hit puberty and their balls get big all of a sudden there are a few years where the connective tissue that anchors their balls to their scrotum is not developed. If your ball gets tugged it can tear lose and float around. Then the chords are likely to get twisted and it will strangle. On the first indication of pain you have to have surgery and have it straightened and tacked down to your scrotum.
Horror stories like this validated the need for jocks, especially in the first years when boys nuts developed. It was easier to have every boy wear a jockstrap as some in the age group approached puberty, than to inspect every single boy every week to see if his balls started growing.
In those days boys and men were much more physically active than males today who spend time indoors or on computers. We played hard after school at sports, in the woods or on the farm. On weekends we worked with our fathers doing outdoor work. Our balls needed to be kept comfortable most of the time and you could always find someone wearing a jockstrap. |

Subject: Compulsory jockstraps
When I entered junior high school, I was told that I would be required to wear a jockstrap for gym class. The first day we were seated in the locker room and the teachers gave us our orientation. We were to call them Coach and we were required to wear white gym shorts, white T-shirt, white socks and sneakers and of course a jockstrap. We were told there would be “Jock Checks” and if we did not have our jockstraps on for gym class, we would have to take gym in just our underwear and T-shirts.
The “Jock Check” went like this:
We were assigned into squads of 6 men to a squad and there were about 6 squads. We would be called to attention and be lined up in our squads. Then Coach Kline would call out the command…"UNDRESS THE MAN IN FRONT OF YOU…UNDRESS!" At that point we would bend over and grab the hem of the gym shorts of the guy in front of us…as the guy behind grabbed your shorts. We would then yank his shorts to his knees and then stand back at attention. Coach Kline would scan the class to make sure every man had his jockstrap on for gym class. Once the Coach was satisfied that everyone did have on his jockstrap, he would call out the command...”MEN…REDRESS” . At that point we would all pull our shorts back up and the Coach would then start the class. As young men…most not even into puberty yet…we thought nothing of this. I actually enjoyed our “Jock Checks”! I only wished I could have been standing beside the Coach so I could see all the bulging jockstrap pouches. Although, I did enjoy seeing all my classmates asses framed by the leg-straps of their jocks.

Subject: Compulsory jockstraps
At my public school here in the UK it was certainly compulsory to wear a jockstrap for sport (usually rugby and cricket) by the age of 14 or as soon as you got to puberty and started sprouting hair in the usual places. The games masters would check up on us and we had to lower our rugby-shorts or cricket-trousers before the game so they could see for themselves what we had underneath. Any boy who was caught wearing his underpants and not a jockstrap, would be made to take the offending pants off and run three times round the rugby-pitch, naked from the waist down and in full view of his team-mates, which, since your unsupported balls - and cock - would be bouncing violently up and down, was not pleasant. If you were caught a second time, it was more painful as you were caned, six strokes "on the bare" as we used to say. Most boys didn't get caught twice. Actually, none of us needed any persuasion to get equipped with a jockstrap as it was a sort of eagerly awaited male rite-of-passage. I know I couldn't wait to get my boy-equipment fitted into one. |

I attended a private boarding school in Maine in the early 80's and we all wore a jock for sports or a cup if playing a heavy duty contact sport. I am wearing a Bike I got at the book store there as I type this.
Fast forward to the present. My son attends a public school and he is required to wear a jockstrap for PE. It is the end result of a boy loosing a testicle when playing soccer and was totally bare under his shorts. The lawsuit and the insurance company all dictated that this happen. |
