Subject: vintage Bif jocks
Does anyone remember the Bif jock? I was at a boarding school in South
Africa in the late 1950s. (See my story 'Jocks in South Africa') We were encouraged to wear jocks for games and I had two Bikes and two Litesomes, which were what were available locally and what most guys had. I wore these happily for games and thought them more comfortable than Y-fronts or boxers. Then I
discovered that some other guys wore jocks all the time, not just for
games, so I thought I'd do the same. I looked in the local sports
shops for a few more jocks so that I had enough to wear one every day
and found the Bif. There were two models, both had the usual 3 inch
cotton elastic waist bands and 1 inch flat elastic legstraps (like the
Bikes), but one model had a two-ply pouch of soft stretchy jersey
cotton, like the Litesome but more close-fitting and less bulky, with flat leg straps, and the other had a pouch of woven threads more like the Bike. So they
were a sort of cross between Bikes and Litesomes. I bought one of each
and found they gave good support (firmer than the Litesome, I thought)
but were very comfortable and excellent for all day wear. They were
also quite robust and long-lasting - I still have one in my jock
drawer, though the legstraps are beginning to lose their stretch. I
bought a couple more but then never saw them again. Someone told me
that they were called Bif jocks because they were designed for the
British Industries Fair, for export; certainly the label says 'Bif, British
Made'. I guess they may not have been available much in the UK and
were probably intended to challenge the Bike jocks overseas - did they
reach the States, Canada, Australia or New Zealand? Does anyone remember them? Allkink does not have one in his collection and 'Bif' does not show up in the search engines.
They were really nice jocks.
