Subject: Jockstrap inspectins in school
How many guys were required to wear a jock for Gym / PE class in school?
Did the gym teacher check How and what happened if you didn't have one on?

Subject: Jock Inspections
We all had to wear jocks from 6th grade on up. Each fall we got the lecture of the importance of jockstraps, the reasons why we should wear one, and the school insurance carrier required it for boys. We never had an official jock inspection, but with the 2 inch inseam gym shorts we had, when we did sit ups the coach always new who was strapped while standing in front of the class. The school office sold uniforms and jocks, so if you forgot yours, you had to go buy one. |

It was not until the 7th grade that I would be required to wear a jockstrap for gym class. The first day we were seated in the locker room and the teachers gave us our orientation. We were to call them Coach and we were required to wear white gym shorts and a white T-shirt, white socks and sneakers and of course a jockstrap. We were told there would be “Jock Checks” and if we did not have our jockstraps on for gym class, we would have to take gym in just our underwear and T-shirts. The “Jock Check” went like this:
We were assigned into squads of 6 men to a squad and there were about 6 squads. We would be called to attention and be lined up in our squads. Then Coach Kline would call out the command….”UNDRESS THE MAN IN FRONT OF YOU…UNDRESS!” At that point we would bend over and grab the hem of the gym shorts of the guy in front of us…as the guy behind grabbed your shorts. We would then yank his shorts to his knees and then stand back at attention. Coach Kline would scan the class to make sure every man had his jockstrap on for gym class. Once the Coach was satisfied that everyone did have on his jockstrap, he would call out the command...”MEN….REDRESS”. At that point we would all pull our shorts back up and the Coach would then start the class. As young men…most not even into puberty yet…we thought nothing of this. I actually enjoyed our “Jock Checks”! I only wished I could have been standing beside the Coach so I could see all the bulging jockstrap pouches. Although, I did enjoy seeing all my classmates asses framed by the leg-straps of their jocks. These “Jock Checks” were done randomly through 8th and 9th grade.

We wore supporters in PE class starting in Jr. High 7th grade, thru 4 years of high school PE. Additionally, jocks were worn during required freshmen and sophomore college PE, plus all of my PE major lab/activity courses. Except for perhaps the first day of 7th grade PE, I don't remember any PE instructor mentioning or checking for jocks. We simply wore them, period!
Things were different in the Jr. High and High School where I did my student teaching my senior year. The PE Department Head insisted on jock checks each day, so during roll call, when the boys stood on their attendance numbers, they simply pulled down a leg strap of their jock so that it was visible below their shorts. This really wasn't a big deal for them. As Bike57 posted, when they did sit-ups or leg raise exercises the jock pouches and leg straps became obvious.
Over the years, when I called on schools as a manufacturers representative, I did observe occasional jock checks, probably until the late 1970's. One I recall was sort of military in nature. An assigned leader of each squad, responsible for checking jocks would stand in front of a squad formation during roll call, and recite something like "All men present and properly equipped"
I still recall seeing a high school freshmen jock check of a fairly large class when I was making a sales call on the athletic director who was also the PE teacher. The school still required cup jockstraps in PE and during roll call, and each boy would knuckle thump their cup when the coach walked by the attendance line. They didn't seem too concerned about the requirement.
Consequences for failing to wear a required jock also varied widely. At some schools the violation might have resulted in swats, in others detention or PE detention, some schools would sent the miscreant to a rummage bin to don a jock which was probably too small, or otherwise grungy but the most common consequence was probably nothing more than a few push-ups or a grade reduction.

I can't add anything too exciting. In Junior High we got inspected every day.
But we only had to show the waist band to our squad leader. We all liked wearing jocks. It was a sign of manhood!
I went to a huge high school. With a huge locker room and huge gang showers. I saw tons of guys putting on their jockstraps, and some parading around in them. I cannot remember jock checks, but I never saw a guy that didn't wear a jock. My high school was in a big town, so there were many different brands of jocks available at the stores, and a guy could find whatever kind worked for him. Some guys looked really studly in their jockstraps, and they knew it! I think we all did!
In those days there was a military draft, and the government wanted American men to be fit. So we had intense daily exercises and running timed laps, before we could play sports games. We wanted to be fit. We liked feeling like jocked warriors ready for what our country would need of us.
Today 60% of young men are not fit enough to be allowed in the military. Our nation is really slipping behind on manly fitness. Jockstraps don't mean so much for this generations. I don't think they even undress in front of each other. I think they are missing out on some real bonding and identity building.

We were required to wear jockstraps for gym class starting in grade 7. We were made to buy a white t-shirt, blue shorts 2-3" inseam, and a Protex jockstrap from the school gym. This would be our required gym uniform from grade 7 to 9.
At the beginning of each gym class we were all lined and up and had pull a leg strap out from under our shorts to show that we had our jockstrap on. I don't recall any penalty for not having your jock on, but I do recall guys being sent back to the locker room to put on his jockstrap if he failed the leg strap test. |

Hi Joe. Greetings from TO. Same in Ottawa, but starting in Grade 9, ca. 1957: pull down leg strap. Hated this then, but would love it now. Times change!
The school nearest our house had a swimming pool, and it was widely known boys swam naked. I was very shy and terrified of this, and managed to get into another high school, downtown. Of course, now it wouldn't both me! |

Anyone know the history of manufacturing of BIKE jocks? I'm seeing them made in China, Macauu, Mexico, etc. What's the newest and what's the oldest? Thanks for your expertise in this area!! |

Subject: History of BIke Jockstraps
From what I have read, jockstraps were invented for bicycle messengers to wear while doing their jobs in Boston, MA to help keep their genitals safe on those bumpy seats and roads. Bike jockstraps were originally manufactured the Web Manufacturing Company and later by the Kendall Manufacturing Company and it was located in the United States back then. I am pretty sure they made jockstraps at least until the 90"s. Once compression shorts came on the scene jockstrap use fell. I even remember seeing a T.V. news story where the T.V. new anchors, a man and a woman were showing a football player bent over in the "hike position" and you could clearly see the leg straps of his jockstrap framing his ass. He was wearing light colored football pants and being wet with sweat...they were quite transparent....so much so that you could see his ass crack too. The T.V. anchors just went on and on as to how disgusting that was and it seemed like after that happened jockstraps were doomed to extinction. Its OK to show women in bras and panties on T.V. but not a man in a jockstrap. I do feel jockstraps are still around to some degree because of gay men liking them and by some older men who see the value of a good jockstrap in providing support in athletics and other areas. Any one else have any input? |

Subject: Compression shorts don't cut it
I have worn compression shorts, but they don't do anything to help my semi-low hangers! I still flop around in boxer briefs and compression shorts, but a jock holds everything in place. I prefer a good, old-fashioned jock that does its job and wears well! |

Subject: Jockstrap Inspections in School
Here at my school, myself and another teacher require our gym classes wear straps. I know that guys in the other classes wear straps mostly because eventually if they end up with either of us teachers, they're going to be required to strap up. I never do actual inspections in class because I make a habit of walking through the locker room while they're changing so I know they're wearing them. I also require my classes to shower after class. That is one part of class they can't get out of. |

I was astonished to hear from a college boxer that, before a fight, the Referee checked that they were wearing protective cups under their boxer's shorts. I thought that they weren't allowed to punch down there. |

Subject: BOXING
No, you're not supposed to punch below the belt. But with any violent sport arms get swinging, bodies start flying and things get pretty wild. If a misdirected blow hit you in the nuts you would have flattened nuts.
I think boxer's cups are extra large and protect the lower abdomen too. |

Thanks for sharing your experiences Now here's mine. JR High was the 1st time we had to wear a jockstrap 1st week we were told we had to wear it or "There will be consequences" 2nd week I had tried it on but it just felt weird and awkward. So I went out with just my gym shorts on The coach had us line up and said anyone who is not wearing a jockstrap take one step forward. I stood firm but 2 boys stepped forward. Bend over and put your hands on the wall! He gave them each 2 swats with the paddle praised them for being honest and told the to go get a jockstrap on and come back! Take a dirty one out of the lost and found if you have to! He then ordered the rest of us to pull down our shorts. I guess my foolish 7th grade mind didn't realize that with the tight thin cotton gym shorts the jockstrap or lack of it was clearly visible to him. We all pulled down our shorts and there I was along with 2 other boys with nothing on under them. Aright those of you who follow the rules pull your shorts back up. You 3 bend over and put your hands on the wall! We each got 2 swats jut like the other boys but without the protection of the shorts. I started to stand up and he yelled get back down We each got 3 more for lying and were sent back to the locker room to find a jock and put it on. Unlike the other boys he told the 3 liers to leave our shorts in the locker and we had to take class in just the jockstrap. We never came to class without a jocktrap again

Our HS had two large gyms, a small isolated gym used for wrestlers only and a pool. The swimmers had to strap, and this was the time of speedo swimsuits....in the 70's. Large gang showers were always a sight. Regular gym, it wasn't mandatory to strap, but strongly suggested. The wrestlers, because it was in an upstairs, isolated room, got to practice with singlets or just jocks. Coach didn't mind if it was just jocks, he said it built character. It also built numerous hardons when he wasn't around. He was one of those..."no pain, no gain" types of coaches. |

Yep had jockstrap inspections. Everything from pulling down the shorts to snapping the waistband or pulling out a leg strap. It was no big deal since everyone wore one. We also all showered after gym class in a gang shower. |
